Says victims of crime deserve better
HARRISBURG - House Majority Leader Rep. Bryan Cutler (R-Lancaster) issued the following statement in response to the Commonwealth Court’s injunction on the Marsy’s Law vote:
“We are extremely disappointed the Commonwealth Court would take this opportunity away from the people of Pennsylvania. Marsy’s Law would simply provide crime victims with equal footing and rights in our justice system as those who are accused and convicted, something that is long overdue in our Commonwealth.
“Over the past four years we’ve heard directly from victims. Their stories are both devastating and inspiring. Those experiences motivated members on both sides of the aisle to take action in both chambers over consecutive sessions.
“For four years issues with the legislation were worked on in meetings, hearings and on the floor of the House and Senate. Concerns were addressed, and compromises were reached. At all times, those of us working on Marsy’s Law kept the words, messages and emotions of victims at the heart of everything we did.
“However, over those four years, we did not hear from those involved in this lawsuit. Rather than engage with us throughout the process, they chose instead to wait until the very last minute and file a lawsuit. Instead of working through the Legislature, the bill’s opponents instead chose to attack through the courts.
“We remain dismayed with the courts, who would choose to silence the voice of the people of Pennsylvania, who were just days away from choosing whether or not to stand for victims and vote to enshrine the rights of victims in our state Constitution.
“We remain committed to standing for the rights of victims, and we will continue to do everything in our power to ensure victims have a voice in Pennsylvania.”
