Cutler: Tax Code Bill is Another Missed Opportunity
HARRISBURG – House Republican Leader Bryan Cutler (R-Lancaster) said Tuesday the Democrats’ self-created Tax Code bill is emblematic of repeated missed opportunities stemming from House Democrats’ leadership of the Pennsylvania House of Representatives.
“It has become a troubling pattern that every time the House undertakes a major policy bill unilaterally created by Democrats, it becomes a legislative hostage situation that forces lawmakers to choose between throwing the baby of good policy out with the bathwater of harmful legislation,” Cutler said.
According to Cutler the Democrats’ Tax Code bill includes bipartisan and Republican priorities but does so at the expense of attacking Pennsylvania’s dairy farmers, giving special tax breaks to medical marijuana producers, and creating new tax exemption zones in Democrat cities.
“There are many sound policy initiatives in this legislation that can increase Pennsylvania’s competitiveness, stand up for our small business owners, and get government out of the way,” Cutler added. “Unfortunately, they are tied in with bad policy choices and special interest giveaways that will ultimately put Pennsylvanians in a worse off position.”
Cutler also pointed out that the movement of the Democrats’ Tax Code bill is not necessary for the completion of the 2023-24 state budget process.
“We are 95 days into the fiscal year, and we have yet to finalize the state budget,” Cutler said. “Unfortunately, there is nothing in this major, unilaterally developed policy document necessary to complete the state budget and fulfill our responsibility to manage even the most basic functions of state government.”
